Letter Grades

DISCLAIMER: Ignore this section (if you can). It is not official. This course has no official letter grades for exams. All the numbers for homework and exams are added together at the end, and letter grades for the course are based on that one number (total score for all work).

That having been said, you may take as a rough guide that 90-100 is an A (including A-), 80-89 is a B (including B+ and B-), 60-79 is a C (including C+ and C-).

These ranges may be a little bit high. For example, an 89 average for the whole course may eventually turn out to be an A. It depends on the overall distribution of the scores (the ``curve''). But don't count on it. The ranges given can be safely relied on. A 90 average for the course will be an A or at least an A-. Below that, you can't be sure.

Repeating what the disclaimer says in other words. We average numbers not letters. Don't come to me saying that you had an A on the homework and both midterms and a B on the final, so how could you possibly get a B for the course. If the A's were all 90 and the B was 80, your total grade is 90 + 90 + 90 + 2 * 80 = 430 points out of 500 (the final counts double). That's 430 / 500 = 86%. The number speaks for itself: 86 is not going to be an A.
