S. Weisberg (2005).
Applied Linear Regression, third edition. New York: Wiley.
The website for the book is
www.stat.umn.edu/alr.
J. Faraway (2006). Extending the Linear Model with R. Boca
Raton: Chapman & Hall. The website for this book is
http://www.maths.bath.ac.uk/~jjf23/ELM.
Nearly all computing will use the program R, which is available on the
School Linux network, and can also be downloaded for your own computer
from www.r-project.org. The first
class and the first lab will be particularly dedicated to getting started
with R. In addition, there is a computing supplement for ALR using
R that you can download from the ALR website.
The web site for this class is
http://www.stat.umn.edu/~sandy/courses/8051.
There will be approximately weekly assignments.
Collaboration on homework is strongly encouraged, but each student
must submit their own homework paper. Students may share and discuss
computer output, but each student must do their own written summaries.
There will be three exams in this class, tentatively scheduled for
October 12, November 16, and the final exam. All three exams will include
a take-home data analysis portion. The first exam will also include
an in-class portion, and additional in-class portions may be included
in the other exams. Writing is an important component of this course.
If there is an in-class portion of the final exam, it will be held on
Tuesday, December 18
from 10:30-12:30. Grading is weighted as follows: each exam
except the final, 25% each, final exam, 35%, and homework/class
participation 15%.
Students who fail to
complete all work will receive a grade based on the work done.
Grades of incomplete will be given only in extraordinary
circumstances, and only after negotiation with the instructor.
Collaboration on exams is absolutely prohibited. Any
students who work together on exams will be given a failing grade
in the course.
The last day of class will be Monday, December 10.
Copies of the
handouts are available from the class web page in the
Handouts
section.
This publication/material, and all other handouts in Statistics
8051, is available in alternative formats upon
request. Please contact School of
Statistics, 313 Ford, 625-8046.
We will begin with an introduction to R, using Chapter 1 of Faraway, and
the R supplement for ALR available at
www.stat.umn.edu/alr/R.html.
We will then do most of ALR in about 8 weeks,
and then cover most of Faraway in the rest of the semester.
