Statistics 5302: Down-loading Arc

To down-load Arc to a PC or Macintosh computer follow these step-by-step instructions. Don't worry if you do not follow these steps exactly, since the set-up on your computer may be slightly different. The end result should be the same (a successful installation!), but if it is not, seek help from the teaching assistant for this class.

MS Windows 3.11/95/98/NT

First, make sure any old versions of Arc (or Arc's previous incarnation, R-code) have been removed from the computer. Go to the down-load site http://www.stat.umn.edu/arc/ on the Internet and click on "Arc software", then "MS Windows 3.11, 95, 98, NT". Click on "Arc32.exe" for MS Windows 95, 98, or NT, or "Arc16.exe" for MS Windows 3.11. Choose a (temporary) folder to save "Arc32.exe" or "Arc16.exe" to, click on "Save", and then find the "Arc32.exe" or "Arc16.exe" icon in the folder you specified and double click on it, or simply open the "Arc32.exe" or "Arc16.exe" file without saving it. At the ``WinZip Self-Extractor Unzip'' message, click "OK" and then choose a folder to unzip into (for example, "C:\\Windows\Temp") and click "Unzip". Assuming everything unzipped OK, click "OK" at the ``WinZip Self-Extractor'' message. The ``Windows Installer'' should start now; at the ``Welcome'' screen click "Next", then at the ``Software License Agreement'' screen click "Yes". Choose a destination directory (for example, "Arc") and click "Next", then choose a program folder (for example, "C:\Arc") and click "Next". At the ``Start Copying Files'' screen click "Next". Arc should now install (this may take a few minutes); at the ``Set-up Complete'' screen, you can either "Launch" to start Arc immediately or "Finish" to end the installation procedure without starting Arc. Everything needed to run Arc is in the "Arc" folder; other files left behind during installation (like "Arc32.exe" or "Arc16.exe" in the (temporary) folder you specified at step 4, and "Disk 1" and "Disk 2" in the "C:\\Windows\Temp" folder) can safely be trashed or saved to a backup folder now. The installer may also have automatically placed some icons in the Start menu. You can run Arc by selecting "Arc" from the Start menu or "Wxls32.exe" or "Wxls16.exe" from the "Arc" folder.

Macintosh

There are two methods for installing Arc on a Macintosh.  The first, and by far the easiest, is to use Mac Classic.  The instructions below are for this installation.  The second is to install Arc in the Unix operating system that sits behind the usual Macintosh interface.  Instructions for this are given on the Arc web page (www.stat.umn.edu/arc/software.html).  If you are using an Intel Mac, you must use the Unix installation, since Classic will not run under that operating system.

First, make sure any old versions of Arc (or Arc's previous incarnation, R-code) have been removed from the computer. Go to the down-load site http://www.stat.umn.edu/arc/ on the Internet and click on "Arc software", then ``Macintosh''. Click on "ArcMac.sea.hqx" (you will also need a utility like ``Stuffit Expander'' at this point; there is a link to obtain this if you don't already have it). The file "ArcMac.sea.hqx" should now have been saved (to the same location as ``Stuffit Expander''); the file should then automatically expand; otherwise, select a folder to expand this file into and click on "Expand into [name of folder]". Assuming everything decoded and unstuffed OK, open the "ArcMac" folder which should now be in the same location as ``Stuffit Expander'' or in the folder that you selected in the last step. There should be two files here: "ArcInstaller.1" and "ArcInstaller.2". Double-click on "ArcInstaller.1". Hit "continue" (twice), choose an install location, and click "Install". Arc should now install (this may take a few minutes); you can now run it by double-clicking on "xlisp.wks" in the "Arc" folder (or on "XLISP-STAT 3.52.10" if this doesn't work). Everything needed to run Arc is in the "Arc" folder; other files left behind during installation (like "ArcMac.sea.hqx", "ArcMac.sea.1", and the "ArcMac" folder) can safely be trashed or saved to a backup folder now.

Floppy Disks

If you want to copy the installation programs ("Disk 1" and "Disk 2" for MS Windows or "ArcInstaller.1" and "ArcInstaller.2" for Macintosh) onto two floppy disks for down-loading onto another computer later, there are details on how to do this at the down-load site on the Internet.
