Statistics 5302: Computer Lab Information

The latest version of Arc, the computer software used for Statistics 5302, has been installed on the computers in Ford Hall B35. It is also possible that Arc, or it's previous incarnation, R-code, is installed on other machines found in University computing facilities. You should use the latest version of Arc for assignments, so speak to a lab technician to upgrade to the version available from http://www.stat.umn.edu/arc/ if the latest version of Arc (currently version 1.06) is not on the machine you are using.

To run Arc on a Mac in a university computer lab, double-click on the following icons: Macintosh hard disk (you should be able to see this on the desktop) Applied Statistics, Arc xlisp.wks

Arc should now run. Should this procedure not work, you could try double-clicking the icon named XLISP-STAT 3.52.16 PPC" instead of "xlisp.wks".

To run Arc on a PC in a university computer lab, select "Arc" from the Start menu (probably using the Programs sub-menu within the Start menu). If this doesn't work, use Find to find the Arc folder and double-click "Wxls32.exe" from there.

If you have any problems, seek help from the lab technicians or from the teaching assistant for this class.

Once Arc is up and running, you can test whether everything is working OK by typing the following command (including the parentheses) into the text window that should have opened:
(load "ais")

You should now see a description of a dataset called ``ais'' (included with Arc) in the text window:

Data set name: AIS
Data on 102 male and 100 female athletes collected at the Australian
Institute of Sport, courtesy of Richard Telford and Ross Cunningham.
Name Type n Info
%Bfat Variate 202 % body fat
BMI Variate 202 body mass index, weight/(height)**2
Ferr Variate 202 plasma ferritin concentration
Hc Variate 202 Hematocrit
Hg Variate 202 Hemoglobin
Ht Variate 202 height (cm)
LBM Variate 202 lean body mass
RCC Variate 202 red cell count
Sex Variate 202 (0 = male or 1 = female)
SSF Variate 202 sum of skin folds
WCC Variate 202 white cell count
Wt Variate 202 weight (kg)
Label Text 202 Case Labels
Sport Text 202 Sport
T

Next type (without parentheses):
Sport

You should now see a list of various sports in the text window; this is one of the variables in the ``ais'' dataset. Again, should anything go wrong, check with the lab technicians . Otherwise you're all set!

Feel free to ``play'' at this point. As well as responding to typed commands, Arc uses menus. So, by experimenting, particularly with the ``AIS'' and ``Graph&Fit'' menus, you should be able to get an initial feel for the software. Most menu items work by opening up a dialog box. Then you specify variables you want to analyze by clicking (or double-clicking) on the variable names and moving them to a relevant location in the dialog box. See what you can do! Exit Arc by selecting "Quit" in the "Arc" menu.
